Become a Docent or Greeter

Help Bring Rhode Island History to Life

For more than 75 years, volunteer docents have been the heart of Smith's Castle. Our docents serve as storytellers, educators, and ambassadors, helping visitors explore four centuries of Rhode Island history through engaging tours and meaningful conversations.

Docents in colonial attire or a Smith’s Castle polo shirt interpret Castle history through 50 – 60 minute tours of the two-story 1678 house from May through mid-October. Greeters provide an important first contact with the public, staffing the Visitors’ Center to welcome guests and collect admission fees.

For further information please contact Smith’s Castle at (401) 294-3521 or by email at info@smithscastle.org. Smith's Castle, 55 Richard Smith Dr., North Kingstown is a non-profit 501(c)3 National Historical Site.

Whether you are a lifelong history enthusiast or simply enjoy meeting new people and giving back to your community, becoming a docent is a rewarding way to support one of Rhode Island's most significant historic sites.

No prior experience is required. New docents and greeters receive training in the history of Smith's Castle, the Narragansett people, colonial Rhode Island, the plantation era and effective tour interpretation. Opportunities are available for individuals with a variety of interests and schedules.

Docent responsibilities may include:

  • Leading guided tours of Smith's Castle
  • Assisting with educational programs and school visits
  • Greeting visitors and answering questions
  • Continuing to learn about the site's evolving history

Training classes are offered preseason annually and include both classroom instruction and shadowing opportunities with experienced docents. One on one learning opportunities are available during the season if the group session has already been completed.

If you are interested in becoming a docent, please complete our Volunteer Interest Form. Our volunteer coordinator will get back to you promptly.

Junior Docent Program

The Junior Docent Program provides children under 18 with a unique opportunity to explore local history while developing leadership, communication, and public speaking skills.

Participants learn about the history of Smith's Castle, the Narragansett people, colonial Rhode Island and the plantation era. Junior Docents work alongside experienced volunteers and staff, gaining hands-on experience in a real historic site environment.
We depend on our junior docents during reenactments and demonstrations. They often demonstrate how children in the Colonial Days used things around the home and would play.

The program is designed to encourage curiosity, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for Rhode Island's rich and diverse history.

Junior Docents may assist with:

  1. Educational programs
  2. Family events and activities
  3. Visitor engagement
  4. Special projects and exhibits
  5. Age-appropriate tour support
