RI Slave History Medallion

History, Recognition, and Remembrance

Smith’s Castle is honored to be a recipient of a Rhode Island Slave History Medallion, recognizing the site’s connection to the often overlooked histories of enslaved Africans, Indigenous peoples, and their enduring contributions to Rhode Island and the nation.

Since the Rhode Island Slave History Medallion program began in 2016, bronze medallions have been installed at historic sites across the state to help tell a fuller and more inclusive story of our shared past. The growing public interest in historical truth, recognition, and equity continues to inspire this important work.

Through interpretation, education, and public engagement, Smith’s Castle is committed to sharing accessible history that highlights the lived experiences, resilience, and contributions of Black and Native American individuals whose stories have too often gone untold.
